“My body my choice” is the slogan used by many female abortion activists to signal that they can do what they want with their body. Or at least that is what they would have you believe. The truth is the issue at hand does not actually involve their body. If “my body—my choice” actually meant you are autonomous over your own body, then this would be a perfectly reasonable statement, however, that is not what this slogan is referring to. The slogan is referring to the process of aborting a pregnancy, which involves a human being not shouting “my body—my choice” This human being happens to be the baby growing inside the womb of the mother of whom, if it were sentient, would probably like the slogan “my body—my choice” to apply to it as well. That is in essence the incoherence of abortion activism. If you are demanding autonomy over your own body, why should another person not be afforded the same right? Assuming abortion activists view all human life as equally intrinsically valuable, it would make sense for them to believe all humans are afforded the same right to self-governance.
If this is true, then there are only two justifications abortion activists have for the action of abortion, and these possible justifications are they either do not consider the baby growing within the woman’s womb to be a human or they do not believe humans have equal intrinsic value. Both possibilities need to be explored because if an unborn baby is not a living human being, we must determine what exactly it is, and if the baby is a living human being, we must determine what characteristics a person must exemplify to determine if they are afforded the same right to personal autonomy as others.
The first argument abortion activists make is that, because the baby inside of a woman’s womb is not in fact alive, it is not its own person and thus it is part of the woman’s body. Therefore, the woman has the right to eliminate it based on the authority of the slogan “my body—my choice.” But is the baby alive inside the mother’s womb? What qualities do humans have to exemplify to be deemed alive and thus be deemed a human being? Well, if we examine the definition of death, we know that death occurs with the cessation of brain function. This means, by definition, if a human being has brain function, then it is alive. If this is the case, then a baby is alive by week five or six according to Michael S. Gazzaniga over at the New York Times. This makes the baby a unique entity from the mother given that if the brain function were to completely stop, the baby would be presumed dead. The quality a human must exemplify to be considered a living human being is brain function, and by week six a baby has just that.
The question then becomes whether the definition for ‘life’ is sufficient. By the current definition of death, a baby at six weeks is alive, and unless abortion activists are operating under a different definition of ‘life,’ we can conclude that a baby by at least week six, is a separate living human being which has intrinsic value and is thus entitled to his or her bodily autonomy. This renders the “my body—my choice” argument for abortion incoherent given the living baby inside of the mother is alive similarly to the mother; therefore, the mother has no right to terminate the life of the baby because it is not her body, and by courtesy of her own slogan, not her choice. This point can be extended past just simply brain function because the body begins forming as early as four weeks after conception. At no point is this ‘cluster of cells’ part of the mother. In fact, 96 percent of biologists agree that life begins at the moment of fertilization. Keith L. Moore, the former Chair of Anatomy at the University of Toronto, stated in his book Essentials of Human Embryology that,"Human development begins after the union of male and female gametes or germ cells during a process known as fertilization (conception)” and that, "Fertilization is a sequence of events that begins with the contact of a sperm (spermatozoon) with a secondary oocyte (ovum) and ends with the fusion of their pronuclei (the haploid nuclei of the sperm and ovum) and the mingling of their chromosomes to form a new cell. This fertilized ovum, known as a zygote, is a large diploid cell that is the beginning, or primordium, of a human being.” The science strongly suggests, if not proves, the cluster of cells inside the mother is its own living entity, and therefore is not at all part of the mother at any point during the pregnancy. This fact renders the chant “my body—my choice” inoperable (try ineffectual, ineffective, unsustainable, or ??) with regards to the argument for abortion because the mother is not in fact doing anything to her own body, but rather killing the life of another unjustly. If abortion activists are still in favor of the practice after realizing this, then they have another definition of life, and this definition is a lot more nefarious than the first.

Since we have dispatched with the argument that abortion is merely evicting a nonliving piece of a woman’s body, it becomes evident abortion activists do not believe all life has intrinsic value. If the baby is a separate living being from fertilization onward, the baby would have to have intrinsic value as a human being, and thus be afforded the same right to life that other living human beings are afforded. However, abortion activists do not seem to believe that a fetus has the same intrinsic value as any other living human being. Why is that? The baby has exemplified lively separation from the mother at its earliest stages, and can by definition be described as having died by week six, so what characteristics does the fetus have to display to be considered a human being to abortion activists? This is the question that stumps proponents of abortion because while it can be proven a baby is alive and separate from the mother, abortion proponents still hold to the belief that the mother still has a right to kill the baby because it does not exemplify their preferred characteristics.
What are those characteristics exactly? I have talked to a number of pro-abortion activists and their argument, once the “my body—my choice” argument falls apart, relies either on the viability of the fetus or the sentience of the baby. If we look at the viability argument, the earliest a baby has ever been born and survived was during week 21 of pregnancy. And if we take a look at the sentience argument, sentience occurs between 12 and 22 weeks. By those arguments, the baby is a living human being by, in some cases, week 12. And yet, even with a baby being without a doubt alive by week 21, abortion activists will still argue that a woman should still have the right to abort her baby up until birth.
Jerry Coyne, a professor at the University of Chicago, argues that infanticide is a morally acceptable practice, and the Massachusetts state legislature in is considering a bill called, “The Roe Act”, that would legalize abortion until birth. Some abortion activists have even argued for abortion during birth considering the practice of partial birth abortion has been legal in recent US history. These activists have no logical argument that the woman can argue it is her body, therefore she gets to choose what to do with it at this point. Now the argument reveals again that abortion activists do not have a concrete view on when a human being is alive. They are perfectly fine with a living, born baby, being killed for whatever reason the mother deems necessary.
If this is the case, what determines a living human being? If forming a separate entity from the mother, having brain function, as well as being sentient, viable and born do not constitute a living human being, then what does? This is a question that abortion activists really cannot answer because it becomes arbitrary. A person is considered a human being at whatever point an abortion activist says it is. Their opinion is not rooted in science or fact, but in feeling.
Malleable definitions of what determines a human being have been used to defend some incredibly ugly institutions throughout history, such as slavery. Many defended slavery on the grounds that blacks were inferior to whites, as Alexander Stephens would infamously say during his Cornerstone Speech. In his speech, Stephens explains that the cornerstone of the Confederate States of America, “rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first in the history of the world based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.” Within the CSA constitution was a provision that permanently enshrined slavery due to the fact that the lawmakers in the Confederacy viewed blacks as not fully human. In this case, the condition that had to be met to be considered fully human, and thus not subject to slavery, was white skin. Blacks were not considered fully human and were not viewed as intrinsically valuable because they lacked white skin. Similarly, abortion activists do not view babies as human and worthy of intrinsic value because they lack some arbitrary characteristic. If humanity is not established on an objective level, then any aspect of a person that someone finds insufficient could render that person subhuman and therefore, not deserving of rights such as life.

If all humans are not viewed as objectively human and intrinsically valuable, then all kinds of excuses can be made to justify evil treatment of an individual or a group of people. Blacks and Jews were subjected to death and oppression based on arbitrary characteristics, and now babies are subject to the same thing. Abortion activists should rethink their position on subjective humanity because if they can apply their subjective standard of humanity to babies with such effectiveness that it results in mass death of a group they find inferior, what is stopping a different group from applying the same standard to them? If that were to happen, they might wish they had extended “my body—my choice” to others.
